Project Description

Fort Collins Utilities completed a sanitary sewer line in North Shields Street from Arthur Ditch to Willox Lane in July 2015.

To minimize the length of construction time and eliminate future excavations in newly paved roads, Utilities collaborated with Larimer County's 2015 bridge replacement work over the Poudre River and road reconstruction of North Shields Street.

Project Purpose

  • To address failing septic systems in this Fort Collins Growth Management Area (GMA), Utilities installed 4,000 ft. of 21-inch sewer main north of the river to Willox Lane and 1,700 feet of 8-inch sewer south of the river to Arthur Ditch.
  • This extension line will serve as the primary sanitary sewer collector for future service connections and allow for the elimination of many septic systems, greatly improving the environmental health in this area of the Poudre River watershed.

North Shields Street Closure - January through August 2015

FORT COLLINS, CO - Fort Collins Utilities is continuing construction of a new sewer main in Shields Street north of Vine Drive. A full closure of North Shields Street from Vine Drive to Willox Lane will begin Monday, Jan. 5, and continue through the summer. Access to private residences and businesses will be provided.

Larimer County will begin bridge replacement work over the Poudre River at the end of January. To minimize the length of construction time and eliminate future excavations in newly paved roads, Utilities is collaborating with the County's bridge replacement work and road reconstruction of North Shields Street, scheduled from January through August 2015.

The Poudre River Trail and McMurry Trail will remain closed (see detour information at fcgov.com/parks/trail-status2.php).

Road improvements on North College Avenue from Conifer Street to Willox Lane also will have impacts on traffic. Until mid-February, this stretch of College Avenue will have two northbound lanes open, a center reversible left lane and one southbound lane open. The project will be completed in the fall.

Utilities work includes construction of the sewer line and a Light and Power ductbank to improve system reliability and capacity for future growth. City Engineering also will make improvements to the Vine Drive and Shields Street intersection in the spring.
