Fort Collins Adopts Interim Target for Community-wide Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions

On October 25, 2022, the Fort Collins City Council adopted a Resolution establishing an ambitious goal for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The new, interim GHG goal of 50% below 2005 baseline levels for the year 2026 is an important milestone on the road to the current goals of an 80% reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. The Resolution reaffirms those previously adopted goals and recognizes the importance of increased community partnership and leadership at all levels to achieve the goals.
“Our community and its elected leaders continue to have a strong desire to make progress in addressing the climate emergency,” said Mayor Jeni Arndt. “From adopting the City’s first Climate Action Plan nearly 25 years ago to the launch of Our Climate Future last year, leading on climate is part of our identity. Setting ambitious targets is how we hold ourselves accountable.”
At a recent City Council Work Session, Councilmembers expressed broad support for proposed actions to be considered in the coming years to help Fort Collins do its part to:
- Minimize the worst impacts of the climate emergency
- Adapt to climate impacts that are increasing in frequency and severity
- Transition to a cleaner, healthier future in a just and fair way for all
“Our Climate Future is a plan and a robust framework for organizing and accomplishing environmental, economic and social priorities expressed by the community and City Council,” said Climate Program Manager Honore Depew. “We recognize that it will require everyone in Fort Collins, residents, businesses and partner organizations, to accomplish these outcomes.”
