Utilities is enhancing the Glenmoor Pond area (on North Taft Hill Road at Glenmoor Drive) with site and landscape improvements. Enhancements include:

  • Improving the trail surface and making the site more inviting by removing the gates.
  • Improving pedestrian safety by replacing the sidewalk along Taft Hill Road with a meandering and detached sidewalk.
  • Enhancing landscaping along the Taft Hill Road corridor and throughout the site with pollinator gardens, woody habitat areas and more trees.
  • Changing the maintenance routine for this site by reducing mowing frequency to allow for longer growth time and a more naturalized look in certain areas, while increasing the frequency of landscape care for the pollinator gardens and frontage along Taft Hill Road.
  • Incorporating an outdoor classroom and seating area that may be used by the nearby Polaris Expeditionary School students for school-related activities, and will provide other visitors a place to rest.
  • Adding interpretive signage.
  • Incorporating art from the Art in Public Places Program.
  • Implementing a dog waste station program.

The images below are computer-generated renderings that show what the enhancements may look like.

Glenmoor Pond is a stormwater management site, and its main function is to provide flood protection. This stormwater detention basin (or pond) was originally constructed in 2011 as part of the larger Canal Importation Ponds and Outfall Project that also incudes the Red Fox Meadows area south of Prospect. In a storm event, this pond area is designed to flood and fill up with stormwater so that the neighborhood and surrounding areas are not flooded.

This detention basin was originally designed and constructed with public access in mind. A meandering trail was constructed and pockets of trees, boulders and landscaping were installed. However, after 10 years, the site will benefit from enhancements that aim to make it more inviting and educational.

Outreach#

The design team has been working with the neighboring Polaris Expeditionary School to get ideas and feedback from students about site improvements. Utilities' Education Team conducted a site visit with two classes from Polaris in September 2021. The teachers used this as an opportunity for the students to analyze the site and provide creative ideas about how to ehance it. The students presented their ideas through their own photographs and imagery.

Some of the students' proposed ideas, include:

  • Seating or picnic tables. These will be provided with boulder seating, in the form of an “outdoor classroom” at the northeast corner of the site.
  • Additional trees to provide more shady spots around the site.
  • More colorful landscaping and wildflowers. These will be provided in “pollinator garden” pockets throughout the site.
  • Wildlife habitat. This will be encouraged by providing tree snags around the site.
  • Informational signage to help visitors and students understand the purpose of the site landscape and habitat value.
  • Dog waste stations made available at the site to help remind visitors to pick up after their dogs.
