Spring Canyon Dog Park Pond Improvement Project#
Project Overview & Goals#
Prior to the completion of this project, the dog park at Spring Canyon had no way of draining the pond water which resulted in an excessive amount of bacteria discharge from animal waste. Because of this, the City wanted to take steps to monitor and limit the amount of bacterial contaminants entering Spring Creek in order to keep up compliant with the EPA's E. coli limits.
The long term goals of this project are:
- Improve water quality in Spring Creek and the Poudre
- Enhance the natural environment in the park to provide better landscaping
- Monitor contamination levels
- Minimize or eliminate contaminants entering Spring Creek from the dog pond
- Operate the dog park safely for the enjoyment of our residents and their 4 legged family members
- Use the dog park as an educational site for managing pet waste and reducing contaminants

We are monitoring the water coming into the pond and the water leaving the pond and testing it for contaminants. This will help us develop better protocols for managing bacterial levels.

Picking up after your pets is incredibly helpful when trying to improve our water quality. Dog waste has a higher concentration of E. coli than most other animals and the less waste that is left on the ground, the less it ends up in our waterways.

- This site will be studied and is one of the first in the nation to use this type of filtering material.
- We are still in testing and learning mode and will apply what we learn to our systems to constantly improve them.
