Safety Around Power Lines#

Even though Fort Collins Utilities power system is 99% underground, there are still occasionally overhead power lines throughout the city. It is important to always be aware of your surroundings and take precaution when working around power lines.

Tree Trimming#

Never touch a tree limb or other object in contact with an electric line.

If you notice limbs, broken branches or other objects touching or hanging from a power line, immediately call Fort Collins Utilities at 970-212-2900 and a crew member will clear the line.

Utilities is responsible for keeping tree limbs away from overhead power lines, and by regulation, can trim trees on private property to maintain proper clearance of individual lines.

Look Up and Live#

Before working outside, first look up and all around to see if there are any overhead power lines above the work area. Keep yourself, your tools and your equipment at least 10 feet away from overhead lines at all times. This includes transporting ladders or other equipment. Be sure to carry all tools horizontally, especially ladders to ensure proper balance and avoid accidental contact. The only safe contact is no contact.
