Telephone Scam Continues to Target Fort Collins Utilities Customers

Posted on: Aug-28-2014

Due to increasing concerns about telephone scams targeting residential and commercial utility customers, as of Oct. 1, Fort Collins Utilities will no longer make outbound “courtesy†calls to customers with past-due balances on their accounts.

Utilities will continue to mail disconnection notices to customers who are at risk of having their services shut off for non-payment. Past due balances also are clearly marked on utility bills. Payments can be made by phone at 970-212-2900, online at https://www.fcgov.com/utilities or in person at 117 N. Mason St.

Customers who have concerns about callers claiming to represent Fort Collins Utilities should hang up and dial 970-212-2900 to reach Utilities Customer Service.

Utilities is collaborating with the Fort Collins Police Department and encourages customers to report fraudulent calls. Using caller ID, make note of the originating phone number, date, time and other details of the call so they can be conveyed to the Police Department.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office also has reported increased calls for similar scams demanding payment for back taxes and unpaid service bills. Residents are reminded to never give out personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller.

For more information or to report a fraudulent utility call, call 970-212-2900.
