City of Fort Collins Today Launches Colorado's First Public High-Speed EV Charging Station

Fort Collins Utilities’ is charging into the future with its launch of Colorado’s first Level 3/DC quick charge electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The station uses the newest advanced technology and can charge an EV in minutes—instead of hours.The City’s charging station program is part of a regional effort to make EV public charging available in Northern Colorado.
Today, City officials and statewide partners will open the charger for use, 3-3:45 p.m., Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, 408 Mason Ct. Nissan (North America) donated the charger to help create the infrastructure that will allow EV drivers to travel longer distances. The program also received a grant from the Colorado Energy Office and equipment donation from Bohemian Companies.
Level 2 chargers support the SAE J1772 connection standard using a 240-volt circuit (similar to what is used for central air conditioners or clothes dryers). Cost: $1/hour charging session.
Level 3/DC quick chargers only support vehicles equipped with the CHAdeMo standard. This station uses advanced direct current (DC) quick charging equipment powered by 480-volt high-power electric service. Level 3 chargers provide a significantly faster charge. Cost: $3/charging session. Contact your vehicle dealership or manufacturer with questions about DC charging compatibility.
Charging sites are self-service and open 24-hours a day. Locations include:
•Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, 408 Mason Ct. (Level 2 and Level 3 / DC quick charger/)
•Civic Center Parking Structure, 144 N. Mason St. (Level 2)
In late February, Fort Collins announced its partnership with the Electrification Coalition, City of Loveland and Colorado State University to establish Drive Electric Northern Colorado (DENC). DENC will help make Northern Colorado a leader in developing replicable best practices to support EV use.
