Police Investigate Serious Crash Involving Mobility Scooter

Released on Thursday, January 18, 2024

On January 18, 2024 at approximately 8:19 am, Fort Collins Police received a call regarding an injury crash in the 200 block of West Lake Street between a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a male on an electric mobility scooter. The Chevrolet Silverado was being driven by an adult female, and she was the sole person in the vehicle. The male on the mobility scooter is an adult and sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. He was transported to an area hospital for those injuries.

The investigation to this point has revealed the Silverado was going southbound on Libbie Coy Way and stopped for the stop sign at West Lake Street. The male in the mobility scooter was on the northside of Lake Street and travelling west on the sidewalk. He entered the marked crosswalk at that intersection still travelling westbound. At that time, the Silverado began to make a left hand turn to go east on Lake Street and collided with the male.

The investigation is still ongoing, and charges are pending against the driver of the Silverado. No formal charges have been filed at this time as investigators are still compiling information and learning about the male’s injuries. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to the police is asked to contact Officer David Kaes at (970) 416-2229.

“It is essential that all drivers are cognizant of roadway users and pedestrians in and around crosswalks,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police Traffic Enforcement Unit.
