Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a child.

On April 10, 2022, at 6:22 p.m. FC911 received a call from a home in 1200 block of East Lincoln Avenue. The caller reported that a child in the home had just shot himself. Patrol officers and medical crews arrived within minutes and found a six-year-old boy who had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital where, sadly, he died from his injuries.

Detectives responded to take over the investigation, and preliminary findings indicate that the shooting may have been accidental. The Larimer County Coroner will determine the official cause and manner of death, and the boy's name will be released at a later time.

"Tragic events like this have a lasting impact on everyone involved, including family, friends, and first responders. Words cannot begin to express the depth of our condolences for this devastating loss of a young life," said Chief Jeff Swoboda. "We will provide an update at the conclusion of the investigation. In the meantime, please keep everyone who's grieving in your thoughts and prayers."

Fort Collins Police Services is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident, as well as helping those affected by this tragedy. Anyone with information, who has not already spoken with police, is asked to contact Detective Matt Schuh at 970-416-8043.
