Police Investigate Serious Collision

Released on Monday, March 28, 2022

On March 27, 2022 at approximately 9:31 PM, Fort Collins Police were notified of a two vehicle collision at the intersection of East Mulberry Street and the Southeast Frontage Road. The collision involved a 2000 GMC Yukon XL and a 2013 Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta was travelling eastbound on Mulberry Street, and the Yukon XL was travelling westbound on Mulberry Street and made a left-hand turn to go southbound on the Frontage Road when the collision occurred. There were two occupants in the Fiesta, both adult females, who sustained serious injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The driver of the Yukon XL, Mark Martinelli (62), was uninjured from the collision. Due to the severity of the injuries, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.

Martinelli is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. He was arrested and booked into the Larimer County Detention Center on several charges. The investigation is ongoing, and formal charges will be filed with the Larimer County District Attorney’s Office at a later date. All charges are simply an accusation by law enforcement officers, and all parties must be presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

“Impaired driving puts everyone on the roadway at risk, and is a completely preventable occurrence,” said Lieutenant Mike Trombley who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer David Kaes at (970) 221 6842.
