Christmas Trees

Fort Collins residents have several options for recycling their Christmas trees for a fee.  

Remove all decorations from the trees before recycling, including: lights, wire, hooks, ornaments, tinsel, and fake snow. 

Artificial trees in good condition can be donated to thrift stores.

The Hard to Recycle Materials Yard is co-located at the Timberline Recycling Drop-Off Center.

There is a $5 facility use fee for the Yard, and additional fees apply for some recyclables (See website for more details). When only dropping off paint, no entry fee is required.  Oil-based, enamel, & Latex paints (interior/exterior) are accepted, as are various other coverings (deck coating, varnish, floor paint, primer, sealer, & stains).

Items Accepted (no additional fees required):

  • Antifreeze
  • Used Motor Oil
  • Batteries (At this time, commercially generated batteries are not accepted)
  • Cooking Oil: 25 gallon limit per visit
  • Scrap Metal: Includes non-refrigeration types of appliances
  • Aggregates: Concrete/Asphalt (no rebar); broken ceramic dishes; toilets and porcelain (non-metal) sinks. Must remove all hardware and seats
  • Baling Twine

Accepts clean construction wood waste (clean lumber, scrap wood, and pallets, no treated wood). No cement, sheetrock, carpet remnants. Also accepts yard wastes including leaves, grass clippings, tree branches (less than 24" in diameter), sod and soil, rock and gravel. Wood wastes may contain nails, but no metal or trash. Tree stumps not accepted.

On the same property as the Larimer County Landfill, located south of Fort Collins on Taft Hill Rd. (about two miles south of Harmony Rd.).  Please refer to the Larimer County Hazardous Waste website for hours and items taken.

The Recycling Center at Larimer County Landfill accepts commingled containers, newspaper, magazines, cardboard, office paper and shredded paper, and paperboard. The recycling center accepts already-shredded paper, but does not offer paper shredding services.

Also at the landfill are a Hazardous Waste Drop an e-waste recycling facility, and a recycling facility similar to the City's drop-off recycling site.
