Mike’s Corner: Economic Health Strategic Plan Kicks Off

Six years ago, a group of citizens teamed up with City Council and staff to create our first-ever Economic Action Plan. Although the Action Plan has served us well, much has changed in the last few years and it's time to revisit our strategic plan to help us achieve the following goals:

  • Increase company expansions within Fort Collins
  • See a greater retention and addition of jobs, specifically in targeted industries
  • Heighten awareness of Fort Collins as a global business location in targeted industries
  • Enhance technology transfer and commercialization from Colorado State University and private sector partners
  • Increase the availability of seed, angel, venture and other forms of capital to support our start-up companies
  • We've tapped into the expertise of TIP Strategies, Isaac Barchas from the Austin Technology Incubator and Atlas Advertising to develop a new five-year Economic Health Strategic Plan.

During the consultants' initial trip to Fort Collins, they met with City Council during a Work Session, attended the Economic Advisory Commission, and met with numerous business stakeholders to get a feel for our current situation and the successes we've had with the Strategic Plan from 2006. They also toured Fort Collins, including Rocky Mountain Innosphere, Colorado State University's Research Innovation Center and Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory.

The Economic Advisory Board will serve as the project's steering committee, however once we have a draft plan created, we'll host a series of public open houses and public hearings to get feedback and make sure we're on the right track.

Next steps
Now-July: Discovery phase: assessment, stakeholder input, benchmarking and SWOT analysis
July-October: Opportunity phase: identify guiding principles, perform an opportunity analysis
October-December: Implementation phase: strategies, communications and messaging, implementation guide developed
December: Final plan is delivered and rolled out.

Stay informed through this enewsletter and Council meetings in July, October and December (specific dates to be determined).
