On January 19, 2024 at approximately 10:21 pm, Fort Collins Police were notified of an injury collision between a skateboarder and a vehicle at the intersection of South Shields Street and West Elizabeth Street. When officers arrived on scene, they located the skateboarder, an adult male with serious injuries and he was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. The vehicle involved was a 2014 Nissan 370Z, and was only occupied by the driver, an adult male who was not injured.

Due to the severity of injuries to the skateboarder, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation. To this point, the investigation has determined that the Nissan 370Z was travelling southbound on Shields Street and had the right of way. The skateboarder was travelling from the east side of Shields Street to the west side on a motorized skateboard and in the crosswalk when he collided with the front end of the Nissan.

“Unfortunately last year and this year we have seen several serious and fatal collisions involving pedestrians. It is just as important for pedestrians to follow traffic control devices and laws as it is drivers,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact Officer Brandon Barnes at (970) 221-6842. Southbound Shields was closed at West Elizabeth Street for approximately 4 hours while investigators processed the scene.
