Fort Collins Museum of Discovery is one of only a handful of museums across the country to receive this distinguished certification
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On July 2, 2013, the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery (FCMoD) was awarded LEED Platinum Certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute for its new facility. Platinum is the highest level of certification a building can earn, and only a handful of museums across the country have been awarded LEED Platinum Certification to date. FCMoD opened to the public in its new facility at 408 Mason Court on November 10, 2012, and provides opportunities for people of all ages to learn, reflect and have fun through hands-on and collections-based explorations in science and culture.
LEED is the nation’s preeminent certification program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. The project’s partners included the City of Fort Collins, OZ Architecture, and Hensel Phelps Construction.
The 45,000 square foot Museum of Discovery achieved LEED Platinum Certification for credits in Sustainable Sites; Energy & Atmosphere; Indoor Environmental Quality; Innovation; and several other sustainable strategies. By incorporating sustainable materials and systems into construction and operations, FCMoD uses less energy and water, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and can contribute to a healthy environment for workers, visitors and the community as a whole.
“Achieving Platinum certification was not an easy task, but given the fact that our overarching message at FCMoD is one of stewardship, we believed strongly that we needed to model that message to our community—that even a building of our size and complexity could be a good steward of energy consumption through creative design, construction techniques and on-going strategies for day to day awareness of our energy usage,” said co-executive director Cheryl Donaldson. “It never ceases to amaze me how FCMoD continues to innovatively lead in the museum field. We are honored to have received this award!” added co-executive director Annette Geiselman.
