Fighting hunger from the ground up

Plant it Forward for neighbors in need. Remember, no donation is too small!

 

Plant It Forward, a joint effort between the Gardens on Spring Creek and the Food Bank for Larimer County (FBLC), is urging all home gardeners to fight hunger from the ground up and plant extra fruits, vegetables and herbs this spring to donate to the hungry during the harvest season.

"At this time of the year, Fort Collins gardeners can decide to help the most vulnerable in our community by planting extra in their gardens," explains Michelle Provaznik, Director, Gardens on Spring Creek. "Each member of the community can make a difference; no donation is too small."

In its fifth growing season, the Gardens and FBLC organizers have set a goal for 60,000 pounds of produce to be delivered from area gardeners this year, which usually spans May through October.

"Our goal is to have 50% of the food that we provide to our clients be fresh fruits and vegetables," said Josh Greene, Food Resource Manager, Food Bank for Larimer County. "We are very close, but we need the community's help in getting there. With the help of our local gardeners, we are able to distribute the most nutritious foods to those in need throughout the growing season."

Produce donations can be brought to the Food Bank for Larimer County, located at 1301 Blue Spruce, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Gardens on Spring Creek, 2145 Centre Avenue, will be accepting donations on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
