The Greenhouse

Unveiled with our Visitor Center in 2004, the greenhouse is a year-round attraction that is functional, educational and a sensory delight. The greenhouse was part of a project within the Building Community Choice capital tax initiative. Our staff and volunteers grow many plants for use within The Gardens, plant sales, and class use. Come see what’s growing today!

Our 1600 sq. foot greenhouse provides greenhouse space for growing plants year round. We begin the season in January with the seeding of 2400 pansies. We then move into our spring seeding of thousands of annuals, vegetables and herbs. After our Mother’s Day Plant sale, greenhouse space is devoted to growing perennials. Perennials are first grown in our greenhouse and are then moved to our hoop house where they spend the winter. After the perennials move outside, the greenhouse begins its fall season of holiday crops. Poinsettia plugs which arrive in August, as well as Christmas cactus, amaryllis, cyclamen, and succulent pots are sold during our holiday open houses. After the New Year, the growing cycle starts all over again.

Our greenhouse has five goals:

  • To provide horticultural opportunities in a public setting for volunteers and students
  • To demonstrate various plants that those with residential greenhouses, sun rooms, and sunny windows can grow on their own
  • To grow vegetables, annuals, perennials, and potted plants for the public and the Parks Department
  • To generate revenue for the Gardens on Spring Creek
  • To allow hands-on propagation opportunities for volunteers, student interns, and youth programs
