Council Tree Meeting Place on George Strauss

Artist
Mary Harnett
Year
2014
Description

The title of Harnett’s mural is “Council Tree Meeting Place on George Strauss’ Property on Poudre River.” She is drawn to use this historic place as a basis for the piano design because of the events that occurred there are unique to Fort Collins’ history. The back of the piano represents Chief Friday and other Native Americans gathered at the Council Tree. The front of the piano shows George Robert Strauss and his wife and the cabin they built along the river nearby the Council Tree. Friday held councils and Strauss settled the land at the same time and were friendly with each other. Harnett  enjoys the  opportunity to graphically share this local history through her mural.
