URA Board of Directors to Meet September 8

The Fort Collins City Council, meeting as the Fort Collins Urban Renewal Authority Board of Directors, will meet on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, to discussed proposed modifications to the Midtown Plan. See the agenda.

City Economic Health Policy Manager Participating in White House Panel

SeonAh Kendall, a project and policy manager for the City’s Economic Health Office, has been selected as one of only 50 economic developers invited to participate in the White House Forum on Economic Development in Washington, D.C. July 30.

The day-long summit, which is sponsored by the International Economic Development Council and Select USA, will feature keynote panels and breakout discussion sessions. The group will also hear from Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President and Assistant to the President for Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for SeonAh and helps put our community on the map with key economic policymakers,” said Josh Birks, Economic Health Office director. “Our regional partnerships with manufacturers, particularly the NoCo Manufacturing Partnership, and business leaders will be well represented with some of the nation’s leaders in economic policy.”

In a statement, JoAnn Crary, president of Saginaw Future Inc., in Saginaw, Mich., and current chair of the IEDC Board of Directors, stressed the importance of the face time invitees get with the Obama Administration officials, saying: “There is no substitution for direct contact with program heads and policy makers. These are the decision-makers, and they need to hear from leaders in America’s communities who provide new ideas and solutions.”

Other participants in the forum include representatives from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Invest Atlanta and the National Science Foundation.

Smithsonian Exhibit Honors Fort Collins as a 'Place of Invention'

For the next five years, Fort Collins will be featured as one of six communities recognized nationally as a "Place of Invention" in a new Smithsonian exhibit at the National Museum of American History.

The exhibit opens on July 1, 2015.

Inventors in Fort Collins are tackling environmental problems by creating clean, sustainable alternatives to existing energy sources.

At Prieto Battery, new materials and electroplating methods are eliminating toxic substances from rechargeable batteries and decreasing charging time and production costs.

New super turbochargers that promise to dramatically increase efficiency and reduce emissions in vehicle engines are being tested at VanDyne SuperTurbo.

Economic Health Strategic Plan Adopted by City Council June 2

City Council on June 2 adopted an upated Economic Health Strategic Plan, which emphasizes more connections to the Social Sustainability and Environmental Services departments and addresses five key themes:

  • Community Prosperity: Employment opportunities exist across income and education/skill spectrums
  • Grown Our Own: The economic ecosystem fosters the development of new and creative industry
  • Place Matters: A balanced built and natural environment
  • The Climate Economy: Businesses adapt to climate change by staying in our community and leverage community carbon reduction goals to develop new products and services
  • Think Regionally: A region that partners to address economic issues that extend beyond municipal boundaries

Old Town Square Getting Facelift

After 30 years, it's time to refresh Old Town Square. As part of the vibrant Downtown experience, the public plaza portion of Old Town Square has been heavily used over the last 30 years. The infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifecycle and maintenance costs have increased, making it more feasible to create and implement a renovation plan. The Downtown Development Authority and its project team are committed to creating a high-quality, public gathering space that accommodates a variety of activities.

Video: A Look Inside Foothills Mall

See a video that gives an intimate look inside the Foothills Mall redevelopment with representatives of Alberta Development Partners. The large public-private project is scheduled to be completed by holiday season 2015. Public improvements include a pedestrian/bicyclist underpass under College Avenue that connects to the MAX Bus Rapid Transit and a new Foothills Activity Center. Updates are posted at
