On January 29, 2024 at approximately 4:14 pm, Fort Collins Police received a call reporting that the informant believed an acquaintance was being held against her will by her husband at a residence in the 2900 block of Middlesborough Court. Fort Collins Police began to respond to the residence and were able to surround the house. Multiple attempts to make contact with anyone inside the residence were unsuccessful, and officers did not hear any signs of distress while on scene. Not knowing if this was a possible hostage situation, the Fort Collins Police SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) Team responded to assist, to include negotiators.

When officers arrived on scene, they did not have legal exigency to make entry into the house. Fort Collins Police Detectives responded and immediately began to draft a search warrant to allow for officers to legally enter the house. While the search warrant was being written, police worked with Poudre Fire Authority in preparation to make entry into the residence. Officers also worked to ensure that the neighboring residents were safe during this event. Once the search warrant was completed, the SWAT Team forced entry into the residence.

Unfortunately, two adults were found deceased in the residence with a firearm nearby. Police are investigating this incident as a possible murder – suicide case.

“This is an incredibly sad case for all involved, and certainly not the outcome anyone was hoping for. Our officers and detectives will work diligently to process the scene and seek answers for everyone,” said Deputy Chief Greg Yeager.

The official cause, manner, and identities of the decedents will be released by the Larimer County Coroner at a later date and pending next of kin notifications.
