Police Investigate Serious Crash Involving Motorcycle

Released on Thursday, August 31, 2023

On August 30, 2023, at approximately 8:38 PM, Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) Deputies observed a 2005 Kawasaki 750 motorcycle near the intersection of South College Avenue and Laurel Street make several traffic violations. As the motorcycle continued southbound on College Avenue, the LCSO Deputies activated their emergency lights to catch up to the motorcycle and initiate a traffic stop.

The motorcycle fled southbound on College Avenue and then proceeded westbound on West Prospect Road. The motorcycle continued westbound on Prospect Road, disregarding several traffic lights, and travelling at a high rate of speed. The motorcycle split the lanes between several vehicles that were stopped on Prospect Road for the red light at Shields Street. The motorcycle proceeded westbound, into the intersection, against the red light. The motorcycle was struck by a 2013 Nissan Frontier which was traveling southbound on Shields Street and had the right of way. The motorcycle then struck a 2014 Audi A4 sedan that was stopped on Prospect Road for the red light waiting to turn northbound. The motorcycle came to a rest on the west side of Shields Street. The rider of the motorcycle was an adult male.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. The driver and passenger of the Nissan Frontier were uninjured. There were two occupants in the Audi A4. The occupants of this vehicle were also uninjured.

Due to the severity of the motorcyclist’s injuries, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collison Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation. The intersection of Shields Street and Prospect Road was closed for approximately six hours while investigators processed the scene.

“Unfortunately, the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and endangered other motorists due to his deliberate decision to ride in a such a reckless manner. All of this could have been avoided had the rider chosen to follow the law; now the rider is looking at serious criminal charges,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

The investigation into this collision is ongoing and anyone who has information regarding it and has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer David Kaes at (970) 221-6842.
