The City of Fort Collins has launched an expansion of the Adopt A Neighbor program to connect healthy volunteers with local residents who need help carrying out regular tasks during the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) outbreak.

Residents who are healthy and able to do so are encouraged to sign up to volunteer. They will be paired with other residents who need assistance with things like buying groceries, shoveling snow, or caring for pets. Prospective volunteers must pass a no-cost background check that is included with the application.

Specific tasks will vary, and volunteers will connect with their neighbor to develop task lists and a schedule.

In addition, residents can request to be connected with a volunteer for assistance through the program.

“We are in a unique and uncertain time, but we are in it together,” said Sue Shafer, the City’s Volunteer Services Program manager. “The coronavirus situation puts some of our friends, families and neighbors at greater risk. Yet, with all the uncertainty, we have the chance to show the world that Fort Collins is a truly exceptional community that rises up to help one another.”

The City will provide guidance to volunteers helping during the COVID-19, like placing groceries on a front porch versus handing them directly to their neighbor.

The volunteer effort is an expansion of the City’s regular Adopt A Neighbor Program. Around 3,000 people have already been registered as volunteers with the City, and the COVID-19 information has been sent to those individuals.

Both volunteers and residents who need assistance can read more about the program and sign up at fcgov.com/volunteer. The City is also in the process of setting up a virtual call center for the program. Applicants can call 970-416-8000 for information about the program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For services in Spanish, call 970-416-8001.
