On November 5, 2019 at 8:40 a.m., Fort Collins 911 received a report of a collision with injuries on the street outside of Lopez Elementary School. The collision involved a Lopez Elementary student and a crossover SUV.
Investigators determined that a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by a 23-year-old male was traveling southeast on Wabash Street. The vehicle stopped at a four-way stop at Wabash and Benthaven Streets, then traveled forward and collided with a child in the crosswalk at the opposite side of the intersection. The child was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies. We are sad to report that the child died as a result of injuries sustained during the incident.
The FCPS Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handing (CRASH) team responded to investigate. The intersection of Benthaven and Wabash Streets was closed for approximately 3.5 hours. The investigation is ongoing. Police do not believe speed, alcohol, or drugs contributed to the collision. The Larimer County Coroner's Office will release the child's identity and official cause and manner of death at a later time.
“Our hearts are with victim’s family this evening, and words cannot express our sadness,” said Assistant Chief Tim Doran, who oversees the Special Operations Division at FCPS. “We’re working closely with Lopez Elementary and Poudre School District to ensure that support resources are in place for students, families, staff, and anyone else who may have witnessed the incident.”
Anyone with information, who has not already spoken to police, is asked to contact Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-416-2224.
