Fort Collins Utilities Stormwater has completed its annual updates to the flood awareness and safety projects within the Larimer County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This plan assesses the natural hazards faced by communities across Larimer County, including Fort Collins, and presents potential mitigation actions. The new updates document the progress made on new and existing mitigation actions.

This effort receives credit under FEMA's Community Rating System (CRS). The CRS incentivizes communities to go beyond the minimum FEMA requirements for floodplain management. Participating communities receive the benefit of discounted flood insurance premiums for residents and businesses. Fort Collins currently holds a Class 2 CRS rating, which results in up to a 40% discount on flood insurance premiums.

More importantly, mitigation efforts directly improve the health and safety of the community. The mitigation projects identified in the plan include an updated citywide communications plan, Utilities infrastructure projects to reduce flooding, ongoing educational outreach, and many other efforts to support the City’s safety mission.

The Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, most recently completed in 2021, is available from Larimer County at larimer.gov/emergency/hazard-mitigation-plan. Utilities’ 2025 updates to the plan can be found at fcgov.com/floodplain-docs.
