Fort Collins residents are reminded that use of all fireworks is illegal -- including sparklers and snake fireworks.

Fort Collins Police will be on concentrated fireworks patrol during the weeks leading up to July 4, and through the holiday weekend. Using, possessing or storing fireworks could result in a fine of $1,000.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, burns account for roughly 38% of injuries treated in ERs in the month around July 4, with a quarter of those occurring in children under the age of 15. Half of the reported injuries are to hands and legs, and an additional one-third are to the eye or other parts of the head. Sparklers alone contribute 29% of fireworks injuries in children.

Fireworks are also disruptive to pets, families and emergency responders. Consider your neighbors who might be triggered by the sounds, intense light or smell of fireworks. Pets also may become frightened by the sudden and forceful disturbance fireworks evoke. Keep them sheltered in an escape-proof area at home where they have access to space and items that help them feel safe and comfortable.

Please don't call 9-1-1 to report fireworks; you can submit a report online at https://gisweb.fcgov.com/Html5Viewer/Index.html?viewer=fireworks.

If you want to see spectacular fireworks, attend the professional Independence Day display at Fort Collins City Park. This organized public event offers a dazzling lightshow while helping those sensitive to fireworks plan ahead for their well-being. Leave the fireworks to the professionals and everyone can have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
