Police Investigate Serious Car vs Motorcycle Crash

Released on Saturday, October 7, 2023

On October 6, 2023, at approximately 6:27 pm, Fort Collins Police received numerous 911 calls regarding an injury crash at South Shields Street and University Avenue for a car verse motorcycle crash. When officers arrived on scene, they located the rider of the motorcycle, an adult male with serious injuries. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. The driver and passenger of the involved vehicle were not injured.

Due to the severity of the crash, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation. The investigation to this point has revealed that a 2010 Mazda 3 was going northbound on South Shields Street and turning left onto University Avenue when it collided with a 2021 Kawasaki motorcycle which was travelling southbound. The driver of the Mazda stayed on the scene of the crash. Police are investigating if speed was a factor in the crash.

“This is the CRASH Team’s 22nd call out for the year for a serious or fatal crash investigation. While we continue to enforce traffic violations, we are asking for voluntary compliance in regard to roadway traffic laws as all drivers play a role in ensuring traffic safety for our community,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

Shields Street was closed in between West Elizabeth Street and Springfield Drive for approximately 5 ½ hours while investigators processed the scene. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer David Kaes at (970) 416-2229.
