Police Investigate Serious Car v Bicycle Collision

Released on Thursday, September 21, 2023

On September 21, 2023, at approximately 5:20 am, Fort Collins 911 was notified of a serious collision between a bicycle and a vehicle at East Prospect Road and Welch Street. At 5:22 am, we had a Fort Collins Police Sergeant on scene of the collision. The Sergeant had located an adult female bicyclist in the roadway suffering from serious injuries; the involved truck had stopped nearby. Due to the severity of the collision, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.

The CRASH Team notified the Poudre School District School Resource Officer of the collision due to the expectation that scene processing would continue into the morning commute. The School Resource Officer worked with the district on the routing of buses and the safe arrival of students.

The investigation to this point has revealed that the adult female was riding an e-bike on the sidewalk and entered the roadway somewhere to the east of Welch Street, with the intention of turning left to go southbound on Welch Street. A Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was travelling westbound on Prospect Road when it collided with the bicycle.

“Crashes like these are difficult for everyone involved. We ask that all roadway users be cognizant of their surroundings and follow the rules of the road. The Fort Collins Police Traffic Enforcement Unit has conducted additional enforcement on this stretch of road, and will continue to do so to improve roadway safety,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

Officers are working to determine what exactly led up to this collision and if there were any lane usage violations. We believe that there were several good Samaritans who arrived shortly after the crash that police would like to speak to. If you have any information on the collision or are one of the good Samaritans, please call Officer David Kaes at (970) 416-2229.

Due to heavy morning traffic volume, westbound Prospect Road was closed at Riverside Avenue through Welch Street for approximately 5 hours while investigators processed the scene. No additional information will be released at this time.
