Police Investigate Fatal Collision Involving Dirt Bike

Released on Saturday, August 12, 2023

On August 12, 2023 at approximately 3:58 am, a Poudre Valley ambulance was driving in the area of City Park Avenue and Westward Drive when they located an adult male laying in the northbound lane on City Park Avenue with critical injuries from a dirt bike crash. Fort Collins Police immediately began to respond. The male was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Due to the collision resulting in a fatality, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.

At this point in the investigation, investigators have been able to determine that the male was riding an unregistered dirt bike southbound on City Park Avenue when he collided with an unoccupied legally parked car at this intersection. The male was ejected from the dirt bike and came to rest in the northbound lane. The male rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

“Unfortunately, this is the CRASH Team’s 4th call out in a row where a serious or fatal collision has involved a motorcycle. While we are early on in the investigation and working to discover what factors led up to this collision, our thoughts are with the deceased rider’s friends and family during this difficult time,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

Fort Collins Police are asking motorcycle riders to please utilize the proper safety equipment while riding motorcycles. City Park Avenue was closed from University Avenue to Lakewood Drive for approximately 4 1/2 hours while the scene was processed. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer Matt Brede at (970) 221-6842.
