Police Investigate Fatal Motorcycle Collision

Released on Friday, July 28, 2023

On July 28th, 2023, at approximately 5:03 am, Fort Collins 911 was notified of a serious collision between a vehicle and motorcycle at the intersection of Prospect Road and South Lemay Avenue. Information received prior to officer arrival was that the rider was not moving and did not appear to be breathing. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered that the rider had serious injuries and life-saving efforts were in progress. Emergency medical services arrived and took over the life-saving efforts. Tragically, the rider was pronounced deceased at the scene. Due to the severity of the collision, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.

The investigation at this time has determined that the motorcycle was traveling westbound on Prospect Road approaching the intersection with South Lemay Avenue when a truck traveling eastbound on Prospect Road began a left turn onto South Lemay Avenue to head northbound. The motorcycle collided with the front fender on the passenger side of the truck.

Police are trying to determine if speed and/or right of way were factors in this crash.

“This is the second fatal crash involving a motorcycle in less than a week. We continue to ask all road users to be cognizant of their surroundings, follow traffic laws and observe rights of way as they are in place to keep all road users safe,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

The intersection of Prospect Road and South Lemay Avenue was closed for approximately four and a half hours while investigators processed the scene.

Anyone with information to include any video surveillance regarding this collision who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer Philip Morris at (970) 221-6540.
