***Update – Arrest Made in Homicide Investigation***
Fort Collins Police Detectives from multiple different units within the agency worked throughout the night to process the scene and identify the suspect in this case. This morning at approximately 10:15 am, Detectives from the Fort Collins Police Criminal Impact unit took the suspect into custody near 3rd and Buckingham Street in Fort Collins. The suspect was identified as Saman Zare (dob: 04/15/1987). Zare was booked into the Larimer County Jail on the following charges: 2nd Degree Murder, a class 2 Felony, and 1st Degree Assault, a class 3 Felony. All charges are merely allegations by law enforcement and the suspect must be presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
“I’m incredibly grateful of the exemplary police work that our officers and detectives displayed in this case. Our initial patrol officers attempted to save the victim’s life by rendering medical aid, our Forensic Services Unit and Crimes Against Persons Unit working to process the scene, our District 1 officers for recognizing the suspect, and our Criminal Impact Unit for quickly locating the suspect and safely taking them into custody. We were able to identify, locate, and arrest an unknown homicide suspect in just over 12 hours, and ensure that no one else in our community be harmed by this dangerous individual. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said Fort Collins Police Chief Jeff Swoboda.

On July 21, 2023, at approximately 10:09 pm, Fort Collins 911 received a call regarding a potential stabbing at 318 North College Avenue, which is a gas station. When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult male on the northeast side of College Avenue and Willow Street suffering from multiple stab wounds. Officers rendered medical aid to the male before an ambulance arrived on scene. The male was then transported by ambulance to an area hospital in critical condition. A short time later, at the hospital, the male was pronounced deceased.
The suspect in this incident was described as a male with a darker complexion, had a scruffy beard, is in his 40’s or 50’s and was last seen wearing jeans, a dark colored shirt, a black hat, and had a dark colored bicycle. He was last seen leaving the area eastbound on Willow Street. The investigation is in the early stages, and this is the preliminary information known at this time.
Due to the size of the crime scene, the right lane of northbound College Avenue was closed, and Willow Street was closed to the east of the gas station for investigators to process the scene.
“Our detectives and forensic services will work throughout the night and endlessly until we are able to apprehend this suspect,” said Sergeant Randy Klamser who oversees the Fort Collins Police Crimes Against Persons Unit.
