Police Investigate Serious Hit & Run Collisions
On April 16, 2023 at approximately 4:43 pm, Fort Collins Police were notified of a vehicle versus motorcycle collision near the intersection of South College Avenue and Columbia Road that was a hit and run. Approximately two minutes later Fort Collins Police were notified of another truck versus motorcycle crash just north of Drake Road on South College Avenue. It was reported that the truck continued going southbound on College Avenue. The bumper of the truck along with its license plate was ripped off the vehicle and found at the scene of the second collision.
Officers responded to the registered owner’s address of the truck, and it was located there along with damage consistent from the collision. The truck was determined to be a black 2000 Dodge Dakota pick up truck. Officers were able to interview the driver of this vehicle, and he fully cooperated with investigators. Officers are working to determine if this driver suffered from a medical event that may have played a role in the collision.
The investigation to this point has revealed that the Dodge Dakota was traveling southbound on College Avenue when it collided with a 2022 black Harley Davidson Road Glide motorcycle near Columbia Road. That motorcycle had two people on it; an adult male and an adult female. Both of them were transported to an area hospital with complaint of injuries. The Dakota continued southbound when it then struck a 2012 black Harley Davidson Sportster 48 motorcycle just north of Drake Road. That rider, an adult male as well, was transported to an area hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.
Due to the severity of the second rider’s injuries and this being investigated as a hit and run collision, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to investigate the collision. “Our officers will work to find all the facts possible, and provide answers to all who were involved,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.
Southbound College Avenue initially had lanes restricted but then was ultimately closed until approximately 10:10 pm while investigators processed the scene. Anyone with information regarding this collision who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer David Kaes at (970) 416 2229.
