City of Fort Collins, Larimer County and Colorado State University Selected for
Environmental Justice Focused Air Pollution Monitoring Grant Award
FORT COLLINS – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Friday, November 3, 2022, that the City of Fort Collins and its collaborative project partners have been selected to receive an approximate $499K grant award for outdoor air monitoring and education within Fort Collins, Larimer County and other nearby communities. This 3-year, community-guided project focuses on monitoring hazardous air pollutants with an emphasis on communities most impacted.
Engine exhaust and emissions from oil/gas production facilities are sources of air toxics and can also serve as key ingredients in ground-level ozone formation. Increasing populations and industrial activities along Colorado’s Front Range are worsening the problem, creating conditions that disproportionally affect people of color, children, the elderly, those living below poverty levels and people with existing heart and lung conditions.
The project aims to address concerns cited by local communities, including improving inadequate monitoring networks and helping local governments better quantify air pollution conditions. The program also provides support for innovative community workshops and educational programs that raise awareness and build broader understanding about the causes and impacts of air pollution.
