Released on Monday, October 17, 2022

  • Public Information Office, Fort Collins Police Services, 970-818-8950,

Fort Collins Police Services will host a community event on October 22, 2022 for people who want to safely dispose of firearms or ammunition.

This is an opportunity to responsibly dispose of unwanted guns and ammunition, which eliminates the risk of theft, misuse, or accidental discharge. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the north parking lot at the Police Services building (2221 S. Timberline Road in Fort Collins). Firearms and ammunition received during this event will be safely destroyed. Information about participation can be found below.

How should I transport items?

All firearms must be unloaded and stored in the vehicle's trunk or area that is not reachable by the driver or passengers. Please transport items in a secure container, bag, holster, or case. Guns and ammunition must be stored separately. Upon arrival, drivers should remain in their vehicle and an officer will discuss removal of any items brought for disposal.

May I turn in guns that belong to someone else?

No. People may only turn in guns and ammunition that belong to them. Participants will sign a waiver indicating that they are the owner and have the right to dispose of the weapon. An ID check will be required for the sole purpose of verifying the identity of the person signing the waiver.

What items will be accepted?

We will accept functional and non-working firearms, gun add-ons/accessories, and ammunition.

Will I get in legal trouble for any of the items I bring in for disposal?

Fort Collins Police Services will not arrest you for possession of an illegal firearm if you are surrendering the firearm in compliance with the guidelines of this program. However, amnesty will not be given for any crime committed with that firearm or for any crime committed while in possession of that firearm. Prior to destruction, firearm serial numbers will be checked against state databases to ensure that they have not been reported stolen.

Will I receive compensation?

No. This is not a “buyback” event, just an option for people to dispose of any guns they no longer want and don’t have the desire to sell through a licensed firearms dealer (example: gun owner dies, family doesn’t have interest in keeping or selling the firearms).

Can you store guns if I need to secure them away from home?

No. FCPS cannot accept personal weapons for temporary safekeeping. A list of vendors who provide this service can be found at

What if I can’t make it on this date?

At this time, we do not have a program in place to accept unused firearms for disposal outside of this event. Information about any future opportunities for safe disposal will be shared on our website and social media.
