On November 17, 2020 at approximately 4:21 a.m., Fort Collins Police Services was notified of a single-vehicle collision at 310 E Prospect Road. A 2018 silver Chevrolet Malibu driven by an adult male was travelling eastbound on Prospect Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle went off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree, residence, and multiple bushes before coming to rest. The driver was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. There were no other occupants inside the vehicle or the residence that the vehicle struck.
East Prospect was closed between College Avenue and Stover Street for approximately 6.5 hours while members of the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team processed the scene. Police believe speed was a factor in the collision and are investigating if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Larimer County Coroner will release the man's identity and cause and manner of death at a later time.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the driver's family," said FCPS Chief Jeff Swoboda. "Tragedies like this leave a lifelong impact on loved ones, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time."
Police are looking to speak with the driver of an orange or red pickup truck that was near the intersection of Prospect/College when the Malibu passed them. Attached is a picture of that witness vehicle. [UPDATE: The driver of the truck has been identified and contacted.] Anyone else who has information about this incident, who has not already spoken to police, is asked to call Officer Drew Jurkofsky at (970) 416-2224.
