Officer Involved Shooting CIRT Investigation Update

On January 12, 2019, Fort Collins 9-1-1 received seven calls regarding reports of a person actively shooting a gun in the 2600 block of Bradbury Court. Fort Collins Police arrived in the area and located an armed male in the street involved in a confrontation with a female. One officer fired his duty weapon during the incident. The Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) responded to the scene and began their investigation. Preliminary information gathered by CIRT investigators indicates that an officer and the suspect both fired weapons during the incident.

Immediately following the incident, the suspect was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies with life-threatening injuries. He died as a result of his injuries on January 14th. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office identified the suspect as Fort Collins resident Joshua Moore (DOB 01/20/82) and conducted an autopsy. The Coroner’s office determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head (self-inflicted) and manner of death was suicide.

FCPS Officer Keith Hunter discharged his service weapon during the incident. He has served with the agency since 2017. Prior to his time at the FCPS, he served as a police officer at the Glendale (AZ) Police Department from 2014-2017. Following the incident, he was placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with agency policy. FCPS intends to make the involved officer’s body camera video from this incident available for public release after the investigation concludes.

Initial CIRT Press Release: The 8th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has been activated to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Fort Collins.

At 10:04 p.m. on January 12, 2019, Fort Collins 9-1-1 received multiple reports of a person actively shooting in the 2600 block of Bradbury Court.

Fort Collins Police arrived in the area and located an armed male in the street involved in a confrontation with a female. One officer fired his duty weapon, striking the male suspect. The suspect was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies with injuries. No officers were injured. One person sustained minor injuries during the initial incident and was cleared by medical crews at the scene.

CIRT was notified and has responded to take over the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.
