Fort Collins Police are proud to welcome a new member to the K9 team.
K9 Eleiko is a 12-month-old Dutch Shepherd. He was imported from Holland prior to being selected to join Fort Collins Police. K9 Eleiko and his handler completed 10 weeks of intense training to prepare Eleiko to serve Fort Collins, including eight weeks at DNA K9, LLC in North Carolina.
K9 Eleiko is a dual-purpose Patrol and Narcotics Detection canine, which means he is trained to locate and apprehend criminal suspects and trained to locate the odor of illegal drugs.
In addition to Eleiko, FCPS has four other dual-purpose canines and one single-purpose explosives detection canine. In 2018, Fort Collins Police utilized their canines over six hundred times.
All Fort Collins Police canines live with their handlers for the duration of their careers and after retirement.
