On August 1 at approximately 5:31am, Fort Collins Police Services received a call regarding a car that went off the roadway and into a field in the 5800 block of south Taft Hill Road.
A 2014 Buick Encore was traveling north on Taft Hill Road before driving across the oncoming lane of traffic and off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle drove through a fence and came to rest approximately 650 feet from the west side of the roadway in the natural area.
The male driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene. His identity will be released by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
The 5800 block of south Taft Hill Road had periodic lane closures for approximately 4 hours while investigators processed the scene. The investigation is continuing and police are working to determine if the driver suffered a medical event.
In addition to using traditional methods of documenting evidence, FCPS’ FAA-certified pilots also co-deployed the agency’s drone to map the expansive 6.5-acre scene. The Larimer County Unmanned Aircraft Systems (LCUAS) team launched in July and includes six regional law enforcement, fire, and emergency services agencies. UAS deployment can improve efficiency and minimize traffic disruptions during scene processing.
Anyone with information about the collision, who has not already given a statement to police, is asked to contact Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-416-2224.
