At 5:39 a.m. on March 26, 2017, Fort Collins Police were notified of damage to the Fort Collins Islamic Center located at 925 W. Lake Street. Security footage indicated that the building was vandalized around 4 a.m. when a male in his late teens or early 20s overturned benches, broke windows, and threw a biblical text into the building. A still photo from the surveillance video is attached. Segments of the video can be seen online at https://youtu.be/rpEowhSgk0k.

Detectives from the Criminal Impact Unit were assigned to this case and are actively working to gather facts and identify a suspect. This incident is being investigated as a bias-motivated crime.

“This incident has a very real impact on our Muslim friends and neighbors,” said Police Chief John Hutto. “The criminal act against their sacred space is unacceptable. Right now, we need our community’s help identifying the suspect so he can be held accountable.”

Anyone with information about the suspect or incident is encouraged to contact Fort Collins Detective Justin Gallimore at 970-224-6130 or amdhbGxpbW9yZUBmY2dvdi5jb20=. People can also call Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-221-6868 or www.stopcriminals.org. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
