The City of Fort Collins Water Reclamation and Biosolids Division recently received a $1.08 million dollar grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). The purpose of the grant is to assist domestic wastewater treatment facilities with the cost associated with planning, design, construction and/or improvements to comply with Regulation #85, which requires new nutrient management control regulations. Fort Collins was one of 21 Colorado municipalities that received part of a total of $14.7 million in state grants.
“Coloradans in rural and urban areas will benefit from these new water standards that improve and protect our water,” Governor Hickenlooper said. “This grant funding will help communities offset the costs of bringing their systems into compliance. In addition, the grants announced today will help ensure safe and healthy water for wildlife, agriculture, recreation and drinking water purposes.”
The additional grant funds will enable the City of Fort Collins Water Reclamation and Biosolids Division to proceed with plant improvements at the Drake Water Reclamation Facility in order to ensure future compliance. Projects to be completed using the grant money include:
• retrofitting the south process train to an A2O biological nutrient removal process
• optimizing phosphorus removal during the sludge dewatering process
• continuing investigations of local carbon sources to determine an optimal source for further nutrient removal
