Human Relations Award - Youth Category

Katherine Nittman
A senior at Poudre High school, who, since beginning her high school career four years ago, has striven to support human rights and dignity. Most notably, for organizing the Gay Straight Alliance at the high school, which, in four short years, has grown to such an extent that, in the words of the IB director at Poudre, it “will continue to be the most effective unofficial PHS school organization.” Furthermore, not content to focus on the GSA alone, she, along with GSA, single handedly built a locking, secure announcement board that all clubs and organizations within the school can use to display their announcements without fear of them being torn down.

Rick Hajost
A student and Poudre High School, who, as one of his teachers has said, has demonstrated an outstanding amount of cultural competence. Though he is not Latino, he has gone out of his way to build bridges between himself and the Latino community, in fact, to quote "Rick is one of the few students form the dominant culture who goes out of his way to meet [the Latino youth], interact with them and develop a genuine and long-term friendship." The means by which Rick has assimilated himself into the Latino community is multifaceted, as are his efforts in broader community outreach. He has been actively involved in such organizations as Cinco de Mayo celebrations, JV and Varsity soccer, Student Council, Link Crew, Poudre Ambassador's team, Habitat for Humanity, Irish Pals, and a Family Center Volunteer.
