Note: All the following classes are recommended for adults age 18 and up. Pre-registration is highly recommended.

Building Patios
Learn how to design and install flagstone and paver patios and walkways according to professional standards. This class will teach you how to prep the space and base, calculate for drainage and grade, installation tips and tricks, compaction and cutting.

Compost: Buying It, Making It, Using It
Adding compost to the soil is considered an important component of good soil management for our Colorado landscapes. But do you buy it, or should you make it yourself, and how much should you add? The quality of commercially available composts varies widely, and over-amending with a poor-quality product is detrimental to plant and soil health. We will discuss what to look for when buying compost, how to make your own compost from landscape trimmings, and how to properly apply compost to your garden.

Tree Pruning for Restoration and Enhancement
Pruning your trees correctly while they’re small makes all the difference in their shape and health as they mature. Learn the science and the art of correct pruning techniques for shade and ornamental trees both young and old. Weather permitting, part of this class will be hands-on outdoors in the Garden.

Starting Cool-season Seeds in a Cold Frame
Get a jump-start on your spring seeding using cold frames. Explore cool-season crops that can be planted in cold frames or started indoors, then moved out. Selection of seed varieties, germination of seeds, soil mixes, grow lights, transplanting and fertilization will be covered. This class will not cover building cold frames, but a handout will be available with several ideas to build your own.

Zentangle® for Beginners
Zentangle® is an easy way of creating beautiful images by drawing structured patterns called tangles. It is a proven method to promote mindfulness and fosters self-esteem, focus, relaxation, creativity, and stress relief. People of all skill levels can create Zentangle® art and have fun in the process! Instruction and all materials (that you can keep) will be provided to create a paper tile such as the one pictured.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Xeriscaping
Colorado’s Front Range is a mile-high desert and gardening accordingly is more sustainable and just makes sense. Learn what xeriscape is all about including how to put the right plant in the right place and how to water your landscape efficiently.

A mixed garden harmoniously combines trees, shrubs and perennials in one bed. Learn how to use basic landscape design fundamentals and plant colors, textures and forms to build stunning border gardens and island beds. How to Turn a Brown Thumb Green
If you’re new to gardening or have been struggling to get started, try this class for complete beginners. This class will offer information about some of the easiest plants to grow, when and how to plant, how to water, gardening terms, and the basics of how to improve your soil (and why it needs it). Learn techniques that can be applied to landscape plants, vegetable gardens, even houseplants.

Grow Great Tomatoes and Peppers!
Learn the best techniques for growing your most successful crop of tomatoes and peppers yet. We will cover the nutrient needs of the plants, staking and trellising systems, dealing with pests and tips on growing tomatoes and peppers in containers. Be among the first to see the Gardens’ plant sale veggie list and hear about Mary’s favorites as well as some new varieties to try.

Zendala
Learn new tangles and techniques on the beautiful Zendala tiles from Zentangle. I will provide all the supplies you need to master this new approach to Zentangle. If you have taken ‘Beginning Zentangle’ then come explore this fun class. Bring your supplies from previous classes and we’ll provide additional supplies to help you create two beautiful mandalas, one on black and one on white using pre-strung Zendala tiles.

Underused Perennials
Learn about some of the best perennial varieties you’re not growing now. The class will feature easy to grow, drought tolerant plants including many that will be available at our Mother’s Day weekend plant sale. Roses Here Are Easier Than You Think! This class is for home gardeners who want some easy tips to help them grow beautiful roses to enjoy in their garden and to cut to bring into their home. Get a list of the best rose varieties for our area and learn how to grow them from a former Jackson-Perkins Roses VP and rose trial judge. Learn what is fact or myth about rose care and get all your questions answered.

Take Control of your Sprinkler System
Learn how to monitor, make adjustments and understand all the functions on your sprinkler controller. Features you might not be using now can make watering easier while saving water and money! Learn the latest technology in irrigation systems. Many types of controllers, heads and nozzles will be available in class for hands-on experimentation. Each participant receives a free high-efficiency nozzle for their sprinkler system. Weather permitting, part of the class will be outdoors looking at watering systems.

Basics of Rock Gardening
Rock gardens allow you to grow an entirely different group of plants! Learn how the rock garden at The Gardens on Spring Creek was built and ways to adapt that to fit into your home landscape. From rock placement, soil choices and indispensable plants, we will touch on all the basic aspects of beginning a rock garden. Also tour the Gardens’ rock garden with its primary steward.
