Two Fort Collins Facilities Honored with ELP Gold Level Status

Fort Collins Utilities continues to make strides as a leader in sustainable water and wastewater treatment. In 2013, Utilities’ Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Drake Water Reclamation Facility (DWRF) both received Gold Level Certification through the State of Colorado’s Environmental Leadership Program.
Both facilities had previously been honored as Silver Partners since 2009 and moved to the Gold Achiever Level, which is the highest level of recognition, this year.
The Water Treatment Plant produces high-quality drinking water for Fort Collins customers. The facility achieved Gold Level status by replacing natural gas boilers with new efficient boilers and cooling system. Since 2007, the WTP has reduced electricity use by 831,118 kilowatt hours (kWh) annually.
The Drake Water Reclamation Facility is a publicly owned treatment works responsible for the treatment of wastewater. DWRF reduced electric use by 15 percent, or 280,000 kWh from last year by installing new high efficiency blowers. The facility also reduced total solid waste by 67 percent and fuel use by 13 percent.
Both the WTP and the DWRF were honored at the annual Environmental Learning Program Awards Event held at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, October 17.
The Environmental Learning Program is a voluntary program within the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment designed to recognize and reward organizations and businesses that demonstrate superior environmental performance. 82 other companies and organizations are currently designated as Gold Leader members.
