Fort Collins Police and SHIELD616 have kicked off a new giving platform to provide police officers with all-day rifle-rated body armor.

Rifle-rated protection is often extremely heavy and not suitable for all-day wear. However, technology advances have led to the development of lightweight gear. SHIELD616 has created an avenue for community members to raise funds for this gear and better protect their local officers.

“Each day, police respond to many different calls with countless unknown variables," said FCPS Chief Swoboda. "While all of our officers are issued standard body armor, the availability of all-day rifle-rated gear will make a significant difference in their safety in any situation. We want our cops to go home to their families every night, and we're grateful to SHIELD616 and our community members for helping to provide this enhanced protection."

In April 2019, Safeway held a “Give Where You Live” campaign that allowed customers to donate funds at the register. This campaign raised enough to outfit eight FCPS officers. SHIELD616 presented the rifle-rated protection to officers on January 22, 2020. This event marked the beginning of a local fundraising effort to help outfit all FCPS officers with rifle-rated protection.

SHIELD616 is a Colorado Springs-based 501(3)C dedicated to providing all-day rifle protection for law enforcement and first responders who serve communities across the Front Range Range and Western states. They have partnered with the City of Fort Collins to raise local awareness and dollars toward the purchase of state-of the-art body armor and rifle protection for Fort Collins Police Services. Each protection kit will include one Angel Armor front and back level lllA rifle plate.
