PFA & FCPS Investigate Fatal Structure Fire

On October 24, 2018 at approximately 6 a.m., PFA firefighters and Fort Collins Police officers responded to a structure fire at 3219 Sumac St., west of Overland Trail.

Two parties were reported as injured, one of whom was transported. A third person was found deceased in the home. One firefighter injured a leg during the initial response to the fire and was transported to the hospital. Damage was contained to the initial unit and the immediate unit next to it.

The initial 911 call came in at 5:55 a.m. The structure was fully involved when the first-arriving crew got on scene at 6:02 a.m. They had the fire under control at 6:50 a.m.

Firefighters were able to rescue one dog from the primary unit and two turtles from the neighboring unit. Two cats died due to the fire after being brought out by firefighters, and one is missing. Poudre Fire Authority’s CART team responded to the fire to help with the residents displaced. Approximately 30 people were displaced due to the fire.

Poudre Fire Authority and Fort Collins Police are working in close partnership to conduct a joint investigation. The cause is still under investigation. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the deceased individual’s name, as well as cause and manner of death, at a later time.
