The City of Fort Collins is asking citizens to help name a natural area in north Fort Collins. This 31–acre natural area is located along on the Cache la Poudre River between Mulberry Street and Lincoln Avenue. It will be transferred by the Woodward Company to the Natural Areas Department and is currently closed as the new Woodward Technology Center is constructed. The transfer is expected to be completed in late 2013 or early 2014. The Poudre Trail in this area is also closed during construction.
Most of the natural area along the Poudre River will be lowered to allow creation of wetlands and
riparian habitat. The goal is to increase the health of the riverside forest and associated wetlands. Woodward is financially supporting the restoration of the natural area which also serves as a buffer between the office area and the river. The Poudre Trail will be reconstructed across the natural area. The new Poudre Trail will re-open in the spring of 2014 and will remain open during most of the restoration of the natural area in 2014-2015.

This stretch of the river supports an excellent riverside cottonwood forest. This new natural area will help provide habitat for riparian plants and wildlife, and will serve as an important movement corridor. Waterfowl, owls, foxes, raccoons, squirrels, mink, beaver, and a variety of songbirds, including migrants, use this area.

Guidelines for Naming:
Names that reflect the area’s ecological features and habitat type are given highest priority.
If using wildlife in the name, it should be a species that frequents the area.
If suggesting a plant name, the plant should be native and predominant to the site.

Names could be based on geological features, historical use of the site, or settlements of native people. Names that are the same as streets, parks, subdivisions, etc. are given the lowest priority as they can cause confusion.

Four ways to submit:
1. Email to c2tlbm5leUBmY2dvdi5jb20=. Print your suggested name in subject line.
2. Clearly print or type the suggested name or names on a sheet of paper and send it to Natural Areas Names, Natural Areas Department, City of Fort Collins, Box 580, Fort Collins, CO 80522
3. Bring it to the Natural Areas Department at 1745 Hoffman Mill Road during regular business hours (M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
4. Fax it to 970-224-6177

Anonymous submittals are fine. Only clearly written submittals will be considered. Submittals will not be accepted by telephone or voice mail. Suggested names must be received by December 10, 2013.
