Fort Collins Utilities and Art in Public Places encourage community members to enter the storm drain marker and manhole cover design contest. Over the next five years, more than 75 manhole covers and 3,000 storm drain markers will be identified by new sustainable die-cast markers featuring the winning artwork.
Contest winners will receive an honorarium (storm drain marker - $100; manhole cover - $250). Submissions must be received before 5 p.m., January 3, 2012.
The 2011 contest theme focuses on aquatic insects in our watershed and how they help determine water quality. To help with your design, learn about the different types of local aquatic insects at http://fcgov.com/utilities/community-education
The storm drain or gutter in the street carries water into the stormwater drainage network that leads directly to the Cache la Poudre River. Storm drains are separate from the sewer system—which handles wastewater from sinks, tubs and toilets—and do not go to a treatment plant, but to our local waterways.
