Case Studies

There are several case studies available demonstrating how other companies have successfully reduced their greenhouse gas impacts through pollution prevention and energy conservation.

CSU Industrial Assessment Center:For local case studies, the Colorado State University Industrial Assessment Center (CSU-IAC) web-site includes results from more than 500 pollution prevention and energy conservation assessments conducted for small and medium sized manufacturers located in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Utah. For confidentiality, the CSU-IAC does not include company names, but you can search the case studies by specific opportunities and actually insert your own company information into worksheets for a quick evaluation of the potential savings for your plant.

National IAC Database:
The CSU-IAC is one of several universities nation-wide providing free assessments to manufacturers. In conjunction with its industrial assessment work, the IAC Program maintains a Database of plant and related assessment information (individual plants are not identified in keeping with Program policies) recording the actual results of approximately 7,000 assessments conducted by the Program since 1980.

The IAC Database is maintained for the Department of Energy by the Office of Industrial Productivity and Energy Assessment (OIPEA) at Rutgers University, P.O. Box 1179, Piscataway, NJ 08855, (732) 445-5540. The web site contains specific information, including user manuals for the database.

The IAC Database currently contains detailed data, available by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), fuel type, base plant energy consumption, and recommended energy efficiency improvements. Projected energy savings, cost savings, implementation cost, and simple payback are provided for each recommended measure.

This data allows you to identify plants that are similar to yours and know what types of efficiency, waste reduction and productivity improvements were most frequently recommended. It can also help identify the measures most likely to be of interest in your plant, and give you actual implementation costs and payback on the selected measures.

State-Wide Case Studies:
The Colorado Pollution Prevention Program, administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), provides free on-site pollution prevention assessments to companies state-wide. They also administer a grant program where third parties have provided pollution prevention assessments to businesses and other organizations such as school districts. The CDPHE P2 Program has compiled the results of case studies they have either conducted directly or funded through their grant program.
