Description

Near the historic site of the brick kilns and just southwest of the Fossil Creek Trail and railroad track west of College Ave., is site of Sphere, an 8 ft. diameter flagstone sculpture by Stephen Shachtman. Mr. Shachtman’s sphere draws from the color palette of the Natural Area as well as the historical site. The sculpture plays off the scale of the site and the nearby tunnel, appearing to be the same size as the tunnel opening.

The Fossil Creek Trail area is not only home to a wide variety of native flora and fauna but was also once home to a brick factory from 1902 to 1952. Historical evidence found at the site, in what is now the Redtail Grove Natural Area, includes remnants of bricks and buildings, bases of the tram that carried the brick clay, and a kiln.

Visitors to the site should search the sculpture to find an historic brick in with the 903 brick-like pieces of flagstone. It pays homage to the history of the site.
