Freeze! Don't dump Antifreeze!

antifreeze bottle

Antifreeze keeps automobile engines from getting too hot or too cold, but it can also harm our health and the environment if it’s not disposed properly.

Metals dissolved in used antifreeze have become a growing concern in Fort Collins Utilities’ wastewater treatment process. Molybdenum and other metals can end up in the treated wastewater or in the biosolids (the organic by-product of treatment).

Before dumping antifreeze down the sink or toilet, FREEZE!

RECYCLE IT!

  • Residents may recycle antifreeze at no cost at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Larimer County Landfill, 5887 S. Taft Hill Road. Hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call (970) 498-5760.
  • Commercial users and others should call the City of Fort Collins Natural Resources Department at (970) 221-6264 or visit www.fcgov.com/recycling for a list of recycling center locations.

Antifreeze is dangerous!

  • Antifreeze is mostly water and ethylene glycol, which tastes sweet to pets and small children. But it’s poisonous. If swallowed, ethylene glycol may cause serious health problems and even death.
  • Antifreeze poured into storm sewers or streets will pollute nearby lakes and streams.
  • Chemicals in antifreeze can seep into the ground and contaminate ground water if dumped in the trash or poured on the ground.
