Stormwater Quality Programs Achieve Gold Level Standards

Posted on: Sep-29-2016

Fort Collins Utilities' Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program has been recognized by the Water Environment Federation's (WEF) National Municipal Stormwater and Green Infrastructure Awards. Utilities earned a "Gold Level in Project Management" and "Gold Level in Innovation" based on rigorous review by members of WEF's stormwater and watershed committees, as well as representatives from several industry organizations. The awards program was developed through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to identify high-performing MS4 communities and inspire them to exceed regulatory requirements through innovative and cost-effective approaches. MS4 communities help protect the nation's waters by developing and implementing programs designed to prevent or reduce the discharge of pollutants from the storm drainage system to local creeks and rivers. Fort Collins' success can be credited to the collaborative efforts of City staff working on programs including, but not limited to, stormwater business outreach campaigns, facility environmental management systems and low impact development. In addition, Utilities has developed a partnership with Poudre Fire Authority to address chemical spills that threaten the storm drainage system. Award recipients were recognized September 26 in New Orleans during the WEFTEC 2016 Stormwater Congress.
