National Weather Service Issues 'Flash' Flood Warning Remains in Effect for Fort Collins

Posted on: Jun-11-2015

The National Weather Service has issued a ‘flash’ flood warning affecting parts of Larimer County and Fort Collins through this evening.

When used by the National Weather Service, the term ‘warning’ means severe weather is occurring or imminent, take precautions. The term ‘watch’ means severe weather is possible, be alert. Read more on the National Weather Service at http://www.weather.gov.

Flash flooding results from rapid runoff of heavy localized rainfall. Soils already are saturated and many local waterways are flowing at elevated levels. Area streams, creeks, ponds and irrigation ditches can overflow or cause flooding. Be prepared to move to higher ground and move belongings to higher levels.

Flash floods can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.

Check https://www.fcgov.com/parks/trail-status2.php for bike trail closures due to high water.

Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are often deeper than they appear. Just 1 foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
